Kahr Arms, manufacturer of a high-quality line of handguns designed for concealed carry, recently acquired Magnum Research marking another expansion of the company following their purchase of Auto-Ordnance and Thompson Arms in 1997. Kahr Arms are manufactured in Worcester, Massachusetts, but is owned by the Saeilo Corporation. The CEO and president of Saeilo is Kook Jin (Justin) Moon, son of Sun Myung Moon, leader of the Unification Church. The acquisition of Magnum Research, manufacturer of the popular Desert Eagle hand canon, marks the second buyout of a gun manufacturer in the past 12 years. The Kahr pistols have also become increasingly popular due to recent increase in demand for concealable, large caliber pistols. Justin is the heir apparent to the Unification Church. Saeilo is a machining parts company that operates out of Queens, New York as is only a small part of the Unification Church’s holding, which are estimated to be in the billions and included the conservative newspaper, The Washington Times. According to Christopher Stewart, who had the opportunity to interview Justin Moon in 2007, “…the billionaire and self-proclaimed messiah who founded the Unification Church and controls a sprawl of businesses presumably intended to sustain and defend his followers when the world as we know it ends. The gun business, along with food companies, real estate, and other holdings, will serve to protect the fortress and keep sinners at bay, according to former members, as well as supply necessary provisions after the arrival of the new world order.”
Unification Church Beliefs and Controversy
According to the Church’s website, “At the age of 15, Reverend Moon was called by God to fulfill the mission of Jesus, which had been left unfulfilled due to Jesus' crucifixion. An essential part of Jesus' mission was to establish a God-centered ideal family. That ideal family was to become the representative family of humankind before God. Reverend Moon has striven tirelessly throughout his life with the goal of fulfilling Jesus' mission - the mission of the Messiah of humankind.” As nice as that sounds, the church has been a source controversy throughout the years involving their rules, recruitment techniques and the treatment of their members. Much of the controversy centers on the treatment of women. Moon’s teachings emphasize family but only families approved by the church. The church must approve of marriages, couples, and children. According to Jane Lampman of the Christian Science Monitor, Moon referred to any woman who was unwilling or unable to have children as a “substandard animal.” Any violation of the church’s controls result in the individuals being shunned and treated as second-class members. According to cult expert and former police detective, Robert Snow, in his book Deadly Cults, the treatment of violators was “appallingly similar to the segregation of the early twentieth century.”
